2024-08-29 00:00:00Z | Aug 28, 2024 | Curtis Donaldson | TAMU Rural Medicine | Aug 29, 2024 |
Curtis Bio Curtis Donaldson was born and raised in Valley Mills Texas, so a rural Texan by birth! He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1981 with a BBA in Management. While attending A&M he was a member of the Fightin Texas Aggie Band where he also served as B Company Commander, was a Bugle Rank Member and a Ross Volunteer. Upon graduation he headed to Ft Sill as 2nd Lt and then served 10 years in the Texas Army National Guard in Field Artillery units in Odessa and San Angelo. He also worked for Conoco during this same 10-year period in Midland, Houston, Maljamar, NM and San Angelo. Leaving corporate America, he started his own business located in Georgetown, TX known as CleanFUEL USA, focusing on technology for the propane vehicle marketplace. At one-point CFUSA had operations on 4 continents and in the USA had customers such as UPS, TxDOT, General Motors and Freightliner. After 25 years of running CFUSA, he sold the business in an attempt to slow down and he moved to Mason, Texas. There he met and married his wife Mary and between the two they share 6 kids! A few months later a small community bank would hire him to help grow their business. As a community banker he threw himself into the community and worked tirelessly on many initiatives such as Economic Development, Chamber of Commerce, ISD Committees, Community Advocate Leadership Team and most recently helped spearhead the capital campaign to raise $5.2 million to help rebuild their burned courthouse. Along that journey Texas A&M School of Medicine engaged Curtis to help them think through a Rural Medicine Initiative strategy and eventually they would pilot that program in Mason County. The Mason pilot results were so good it spread to the 5 surrounding counties and those results have been so good they had inquiries from other counties as word spread among medical providers and County Judges. Texas A&M then elected to take the program statewide and asked Donaldson to lead that charge. With his roots in rural Texas from Valley Mills to his now living in rural Mason, he is even more passionate about changing the landscape of rural medicine and has been moved by the impact the program is already having in so many communities. Curtis works 50% for the Office of the President as their Director of Community Engagement for Rural Texas and 50% for the School of Medicine as their Director of Rural Medicine. |

2024-09-12 00:00:00Z | Sep 11, 2024 | Leon Willhite | District Governor Visit | Sep 12, 2024 |
In 1992, Leon was invited to visit the 350-member Rotary Club of Waco. He had recently become the Executive Director of a regional planning agency. Realizing that many of the key business and governmental leaders in the Waco area were active Rotarians, he quickly agreed to join. Although Leon joined Rotary to strengthen access to other leaders, he quickly learned the impact of joining forces with other Rotarians provided powerful opportunities to be of service in the community and around the world. Leon served eleven years in the Rotary Club of Waco with ten years of perfect attendance.
Leon and his high school sweetheart, Lynn, were born and reared in Palestine. After Leon graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in architecture and Lynn graduated with a degree in mathematics from Texas Christian University, they were married. Then they enrolled in graduate school at Texas A&M. Leon received a degree in Urban Planning and Lynn received a degree in Mathematics. Following college, Leon was commissioned an Officer in the Army Corps of Engineers and served at Ft Belvoir Virginia and eight years in the reserves. Leon and Lynn are proud of their two adult children, Melissa and Lee and their six grandchildren. During Leon’s professional career, he served eighteen years in the Governor’s Office of Planning and Economic Development, two years as the Executive Director of the State Property Tax Board, and twelve years as the Executive Director of the Heart of Texas Council of Governments, a regional planning agency in Waco. After nurturing the family from home until the children enrolled in school, Lynn entered Seminary to become a Methodist Pastor. Over 27 years, Lynn was able to serve 5 different churches.
After retirement in 2003, Leon and Lynn returned to Palestine. Leon served as President of the Palestine Economic Development Corporation and the Palestine Chamber of Commerce. He has served on the boards of numerous organizations including the YMCA, Meals on Wheels, and his local church. In 2004, Leon joined the Rotary Club of Palestine and continues to be an active member with 20 years of perfect attendance. Leon has served in director roles in service, membership and administration and has served as club President in 2009-10 and 2019-20. Leon is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Paul Harris Society and a charter member of the Polio Plus Society. Leon was awarded the district 5910 Roll of Fame in 2012. Leon has served at the district level beginning with the RYLA Adult Leadership Team in 2005. He served as the leader of the RYLA Ropes Course at Woodlake for 5 years and continues to be an active leader. Leon has served as Assistant District Governor 2012-14 and 2021-23. Leon and Lynn’s heart for service led them to become volunteers on a Palestine Rotary Team that responded to Hurricane Harvey in 2017 mucking houses along the Texas coastal area. In 2019, Leon and Lynn traveled to India with a Team of Rotarians from the United States and Canada to participate in a National Polio Immunization Day to help eradicate Polio. In May 2023, Lynn followed in her father’s footsteps and joined Leon as a member of the Rotary Club of Palestine.

In 2003 she and her family relocated back to Texas in Burleson County where she continued to work for Liberty Mutual from her remote home office. She joined the local volunteer fire department in 2004 and became a first responder in 2005. She also served on the fire department’s board as secretary and treasurer. She retired from the volunteer fire department in 2022. Patricia became the Project Linus Brazos Valley Coordinator in 2019. Her coordinator role includes supporting chapter volunteers with a safe, positive and learning environment and to assist the volunteers with our mission to comfort children in need with homemade blankets. The role also includes efforts to secure funding to support the general operating expenses and program services of the organization. Brazos Valley Project Linus
The Project Linus mission is to provide handmade blankets to children aged 0-18 in the United States who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. There are chapters in every state with Texas having approximately 17 chapters. The national website is https://projectlinus.org Our chapter, Brazos Valley, covers the Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Madison, Milam, Robertson, Waller and Washington counties. Our blankets are distributed locally to organizations that support children. From time-to-time blankets may be shipped to other areas in the United States that may have an immediate extraordinary need. Some of the local organizations we distribute our blankets to are: Ronald McDonald House, Hope Pregnancy Center, Phoebes Home, Hope Locker - Bryan ISD, Casa (Bryan and Brenham when requested) and Chrissy’ Closet – College Station ISD (new). Our chapter makes machine quilted and knitted or crocheted blankets. Blankets are hand-made from new fabric or yarn by local volunteers. Blankets are dropped off at Sew Vac City in College Station, JoAnn’s Fabric in Bryan or at our monthly meetings at Sew Vac City. Our chapter meets at 10AM on the 3rd Tuesday each month at Sew Vac City. Attending the meetings is not a requirement to be a member. You do not have to be a member to donate to the Brazos Valley chapter. You can make a real difference in so many ways by donating monetarily to Project Linus. We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Monies are used for purchasing blanket supplies. Our chapter also welcomes donated materials to make blankets such as quilt batting, cotton fabric, or acrylic or cotton yarn. We also welcome information on additional organizations that we could provide blankets to for children in need. |

2024-12-19 00:00:00Z | Dec 18, 2024 | Captain Luis Villanueva | The Salvation Army - Doing The Most Good | Dec 19, 2024 |
Luis Villanueva Captain of the Salvation Army. Salvation Army Day is March 10th. Luis is from Chile, South America. His parents are Salvation Army officers so he was able to experience a lot of the ministry with different cultures and backgrounds growing up. He got his degree in translating English and Spanish. After eight months of working through the visa process he stepped foot on US ground in Salt Lake City in 2007. When he was working for the Western Territory all of a sudden his visa was terminated, and he had to go back to Chile. One year passed, and then the Waxahachie Corps was looking for a youth worker. They saw his resume, called him and eight months later, he's here in the Texas Division with people that he doesn't know. He and his wife knew that they had a calling to be Salvation Army officers but they didn't know what was going to happen. They were in Texas, and met Major Betty Jo MacDonald, who attended their corps. After a year, she said, "I think you guys have a calling to be officers." They talked about their calling, and she said, "Sure enough!" His advice to anyone who God has been called to be an officer is to pray! Let God confirm you, at least two or three times. If you're not sure that this is what God wants from you, instead of being a help it could be a problem for you and your family. Pray and ask God for confirmation through the Scripture and through people. It can be the greatest ministry in your life if it is a calling because God will sustain you in all those years, whether good or bad. Being a Salvation Army officer is totally different than only being a pastor. That's something he learned. It is a lot of work. But this is going to be the greatest opportunity that you have to impact as many people you encounter. This was adapted from the Salvation Army website, you can read the original here. |
